Our Story

On April 7, 1912, the Harper Methodist Episcopal Church was chartered during the Easter morning worship service with Rev. Roy Mealy as minister and Rev. James B. DeBord officiating. The eight charter members met in the two-room schoolhouse on the southwest corner of Orange Ave. and 17th St. They later moved to Center St. and Newport Blvd. where the Harper Church was dedicated in March of 1915.

Current Series

We all have teams or groups that we would call ourselves followers of. There is a difference between being fan or a follower of something. A follower is invested and follows no matter the circumstances of current mood. If you are a follower of a team you would call them your team no matter how they produce. A fan however likes the idea of a team or group, but when things aren’t going well, or it isn’t convenient they no longer claim the team or group. Many biblical characters were fans of Jesus. They loved the idea of Jesus, but when it came down to the hard act of actually following Christ they walked away. Many of us want to be followers, but we end up being fans. This series will look at different biblical characters and the way they can encourage us to try to follow Jesus.

Different Kind of Christmas

Do you remember the childhood feeling of expectation as Christmas approached? Do you still have it? If you have had disappointing holidays in the past, what would it take to feel expectant about this one? What if we are hoping for the wrong things? What if we have a chance this Advent season to be expectant for something more. There are a lot of changes going on for our church and community. My hope is that as we go through the Advent season, we will have a chance to be expectant and hopeful for where our community is headed! Join us this Advent for a “Different kind of Christmas” as we talk about what is next as we journey toward Bethlehem.

Sunday Morning Worship Service

Sunday Mornings at 10:00 am.

Beginning July 2016, First UMC Costa Mesa began construction not only on our buildings, but within our church community. As the campus itself transitions so are the ministries and worship services. God is beginning a new thing in this historic landmark. What does that look like? It looks like a gathering of diverse people coming from all different walks of life. Some have been a part of this community since the early ’40s, and for some, this is their first Sunday.

Please join us as we begin the exciting process of imagining and creating what’s next. Our Sunday morning worship service is at 10:00 am.

If You Are New to Our Church

If you are new to our church’s worship service, here are some things to enhance your first worship experience with us. On Sunday mornings there are currently no classroom spaces, but we love to welcome children and families into the worship space itself. There is a space for comforting crying babies. Parking is located all around our building, feel free to park in any open spot.
